TORONTO -- How young will Vancouvers starting lineup be Wednesday for the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship semifinal against Toronto FC? "Younger than young," Whitecaps coach Carl Robinson said with a smile. "Because my first-team squad is young anyway so its a little bit younger than that. "I want to give the opportunity to some of the younger players Ive got in my squad to see how close they are to being ready. Theyve got great, fantastic ability but the only way they can learn is by challenging them in certain game situations and I think (Wednesday) is a perfect example for them to get given the opportunity. "Ive got 100 per cent faith in them." FC Edmonton hosts the defending champion Montreal Impact in the other first-leg semifinal Wednesday. Edmonton advanced by dispatching Ottawa Fury FC 3-1 on aggregate in a battle of North American Soccer League teams. Theres likely more than national pride at stake for Vancouver in showcasing the young Canadians. The Whitecaps (3-2-4) are coming off a 3-2 home win over the San Jose Earthquakes. Facing a game in Columbus on Saturday, it makes sense to rest some starters with three games in a week. So Robinson, who brought 26 players on the road trip, plans to give Canadian youth a chance with starts for 17-year-old goalkeeper Marco Carducci and 20-year-old midfielder Bryce Alderson. Midfielder Russell Teibert, a 21-year-old who already has 46 MLS appearances under his belt, will also start and Robinson is expected to have other young Canadian talent such as teenage midfielders Marco Bustos and Kianz Froese, in his matchday 18. Carducci, who has twice been named Canadian Under-17 Player of the Year, starts ahead of No. 2 keeper Paolo Tornaghi. "Im going to be very excited," Carducci said Tuesday when asked what his emotions will be come kickoff. Robinson speaks glowingly about his young keeper, a Calgary native who played for Canada at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup. "Hes brilliant," said the former Welsh international, praising his commitment, work ethic and temperament. Alderson is also bubbling with excitement. "Its huge," said Alderson, who captained Canada at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup and has played for the Olympic team in qualifying. A native of Kitchener, Ont., he grew up supporting Toronto FC. Now he is trying to find tickets for family and friends to see him play against them at BMO Field. Its also a home showcase for Teibert, a native of Niagara Falls, Ont., and former member of the Toronto FC Academy. "It means a lot," he said. "Its a Canadian championship and we havent been the best team in Canada just yet. Hopefully this is the year." Robinson plans to save his starting centre backs Jay DeMerit and Andy OBrien for Saturdays game in Columbus. Johnny Leveron and Carlyle Mitchell, who have deputized for the two veterans before, will likely take over Wednesday. The Whitecaps also recalled striker Omar Salgado from the Charleston Battery of USL Pro on Tuesday. Salgado will be available for Wednesdays game. Toronto has the weekend off so is facing less of a short-term fixture crunch. And given it is only now returning to a full roster after a slew of injuries, the chance to give the first team more time to play together is welcome. Still manager Ryan Nelsen plans to give goalie Joe Bendik his first start of the season, opting to rest Brazilian No. 1 Julio Cesar. That opens the door for Bendik, who started 33 games for Toronto last season before losing his job to Cesar this year. Midfielder Jeremy Hall (Achilles) is out while defender Bradley Orr (calf) and midfielder Jonathan Osorio (charley horse) are doubtful. Nelsen says designated players Jermain Defoe, Michael Bradley and Gilberto will "most likely" see action. "Theyre all desperate to play," he said. Defoe and Bradley have both missed time due to injury so still are finding their legs, the manager said. And while Brazilian striker Gilberto has yet to score, he is threatening in front of goal. "In all honesty, they do need games," Nelsen said. The Toronto manager also pointed out matter-of-factly that he tends to starts a lot of his young Canadians week in and out, with defender Doneil Henry and midfielders Osorio and Kyle Bekker as Exhibits A, B and C in recent weeks. Toronto (3-4-0) dropped its third straight game when it lost 2-1 to visiting New England on the weekend. Nelsens team, which has had widespread injury problems, has lost four of the last five. Montreal captured the inaugural Canadian championship in 2008. Toronto won it the next four years before the Impact claimed it again last year. Vancouver has finished runners-up five straight years. The winner hoists the Voyageurs Cup, donated by the Voyageurs Canadian supporters group, and earns a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League, a 24-team competition featuring clubs from North and Central America and the Caribbean. The CONCACAF Champions League winner advances to the FIFA Club World Cup. Detroit Lions Jerseys China . The bout served as the headlining matchup of Saturdays "UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva" event, which took place at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati. It was Silva who looked well on his way to victory in the early going, delivering a pair of crushing kicks to the body that sent Brown crashing to the floor, doubled over in pain.SAN FRANCISCO -- Manager Don Mattingly hardly considers a late-July sweep in San Francisco a turning point to put his Dodgers in the drivers seat atop the NL West. Yet coming off consecutive series losses at St. Louis and Pittsburgh, Los Angeles needed some sort of spark as August approaches. The Dodgers found it in the ballpark of their biggest rival, and left the Bay Area in first place following an emphatic three-game swing. Carl Crawford hit an RBI triple to back Hyun-Jin Ryus third straight victory, and division-leading Los Angeles beat the Giants 4-3 Sunday night to establish some momentum behind their pitching and offence. "You make enough of a statement by winning three games," Mattingly said. "Obviously its something. Thats all it is at that point because you have a lot of baseball to play. Were going to see these guys again. Theyre not going anywhere." Matt Kemp singled twice and the Dodgers leave the Bay Area with a 1 1/2-game division lead after outscoring the Giants 17-4. "Getting offence for three days is kind of like when you dont get it for three days, you dont really know where its going to continue to go," Mattingly said. "Its a chance to build momentum, its a confidence builder for your club to be able to come into a tough environment and play well." Ryu (12-5) moved within two wins of his rookie total last year and improved to 4-1 in five outings at AT&T Park, where in one dominant weekend the Dodgers made quite a statement to take over the NL Wests top spot. "It was great. To come out of here with a 1 1/2-game lead, especially coming into it with a 1 1/2-game deficit, obviously best-case scenario," first baseman Adrian Gonzalez said. "After the first leg of this road trip where we lost both series, this kind of made everything great, winning a series, winning a road trip and going home on a great note." In his Giants debut, Jake Peavy threw a pair of wild pitches in the fifth as the Dodgers went ahead on Hanley Ramirezs RBI single ahead of Crawfords triple to the corner in deep right field. San Francisco suffered its first three-game sweep in the rivalry since June 24-26, 2013, at Dodger Stadium. The last Dodgers sweep at AT&T Park came July 27-29, 2012. Buster Posey hit a solo hhome run in the fifth for San Franciscos first extra-base hit since Hunter Pence doubled in the ninth inning Wednesday at Philadelphia -- the Giants first three-game stretch without an extra-base hit since May 30-June 1, 2002.dddddddddddd Ryu struck out seven in six innings and improved to 8-2 in 11 road starts. Kenley Jansen followed scoreless innings by J.P. Howell and Brian Wilson for his 30th save. Peavy (0-1) pitched a day after being traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Giants for a pair of minor league pitchers, reuniting him with former manager Bruce Bochy. Peavy pitched for Bochy and the Padres in the playoffs in 2005-06. Bochy stuck with the right-hander to get through the sixth after he allowed a leadoff walk to Juan Uribe. Peavy drew regular roars from a lively sellout crowd at AT&T Park as fans found plenty to cheer for after a frustrating few days. He allowed six hits and four runs -- three earned -- struck out five and walked two in six innings. Peavy dropped to 14-3 with a 2.28 ERA in 26 starts against Los Angeles, including a three-hitter last Aug. 25 at Dodger Stadium in which he struck out five and walked one. Second baseman Dan Uggla committed two errors, including one that helped tie it early after he scored the games first run in the bottom of the third. Ugglas fielding error leading off the top of the fourth allowed Ramirez to reach and Uribe later singled in the tying run. The Giants lost for the 19th time in their last 25 home games. "Its going to be important to put it behind us," Bochy said. "We have to regroup." NOTES: With speculation that Kemp might be traded, Mattingly says the OF has no issue playing RF and "This combination of guys, this is what we like." ... Of the Dodgers Triple-A benches-clearing brawl with the Diamondbacks affiliate on Saturday, Mattingly said the No. 1 thing is "nobodys hurt."... Former Giants closer Wilson drew cheers during pregame warmups, then boos for the beard when the Los Angeles reliever jogged out for the bottom of the eighth. ... Madison Bumgarner (12-7) pitches when San Francisco begins a three-game series at home with Pittsburgh on Monday night while the Dodgers have an off day before starting an eight-game homestand Tuesday against Atlanta.
